Theme: We are in the world but not of the world

What you need to do this project:

John 17:16-19 reminds us that we are not of this world but as Christians we are sent into the world. 1 Peter 2:9 in the KJV tells us that we are a peculiar people. In this project will create a visual reminder that we are not of this world, an alien sculpture.

Start by covering the styrofoam ball with paper clay smoothing it with water as you go. This will be the head. Be sure to leave a small opening in the clay at the bottom to insert the wire armature into. Once the ball is covered, sculpt the details onto the face. Next build the armature (the ³skeleton² of the sculpture) out of a heavy wire, like coat hanger wire. Sculpt hands and feet (or tentacles or whatever) onto the arm and leg ends of the armature. Since our alien will be holding a sign be sure to pose one of the hands wrapped around a length of dowel. Be sure to make the feet big enough that the alien will stand. Insert the head onto the neck of the armiture and allow it the clay dry. While it is drying, design a robe or other garment or your alien and ³sew² it together with the hot glue gun (or stitch it). Be sure to leave the neck opening open far enough to get the head through.

When the clay has dried, paint and decorate the head hands and feet as you see fit. Wrap the armature with batting to ³fill² the clothes. Then dress your creature and finish decorating. Take a square of illustrration board and paint the words not of this world on it and hot glue it to the dowel in the aliens hand. Your alien should now be complete.

While you are working on the project discuss what it means to be ³not of this world.² Discuss ways that we can ³stand out² from the rest of the world for Jesus; what greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world² means, etc.

Group the aliens as a display along with a small backdrop with the earth on it and John 17:16 written on it. Once the display is finished send the aliens home with their creators as a reminder to be ³not of this world for Jesus.²
